Our vision for migrant care workers in UK adult social care
Migrant care workers deserve respect, dignity and fair pay in the workplace. International recruits in social care have, in recent years, been subjected to unacceptable treatment including fraud, underpayment of wages, bullying, racism and many other forms of exploitation and mistreatment.
UNISON migrant care worker members are building power in their workplaces, to improve their working conditions. Migrant care workers should be able to change roles in the sector without threats or harassment from their employers over their visa status. We believe all adult social care workers in the UK deserve fair treatment, irrespective of their immigration or citizenship status.

Take part in the campaign to change visa sponsorship in social care
Join the hundreds of migrant care workers who have already emailed their MP to ask the Government to take over sponsorship of migrant care staff from employers. This will make it simpler and easier to move to a new care employer. Will you take part? The current system – where care companies sponsor migrant care staff – allows unscrupulous bosses to abuse their power. We cannot allow this to continue.
Members can find options for new sponsoring employers using the UNISON funded database from the Autonomy Institute. It utilises data from the Home Office, Health Watchdog, Care Quality Commission and other sources to enable members to find sponsoring employers in their area – helping members leave exploitative employers whilst protecting their visa status.
UNISON’s Migrant Worker Network builds connections between migrant worker members across different sectors. You can find out more about the network and join here:
UNISON Migrant Worker Members can access expert immigration advice for themselves and their families via a UNISON funded partnership with the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI). Members can access the advice service via UNISONdirect who can then arrange an appointment for the member with a JCWI advisor. Call UNISONdirect on 0800 0857 857.
